Creating costumes for Little Women the musical

11 May 2018

Very excited to be the wardrobe mistress for the touring production of Little Women the musical this summer in Cornwall with TAODS (Truro Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society).

Lots of civil war crinoline and victorian costume - what's not to love?!!

Amateur dramatics have small budgets but the amdram community in Cornwall is brilliant. Our first port of call was Gillian Geer, who has a wonderful wardrobe full of Victorian era costumes worn at Helston Flora Day, the Minnack and Helston Theatre Company (HTC). Our Little Women have a wonderful time trying on different outfits, selecting styles that would best fit their characters' diverse personalities.

Cast: Sophie Haddock - Meg March; Hazel Curnow and Stephanie Rosewarne - Beth March; Bethany Lyne and Cat Leach - Amy.

We have a very tight deadline getting enough costumes together for a photoshoot so we can do some publicity for the Show. We spent quite a few days down in the wardrobe at Redannick pulling out and measuring character and period appropriate costumes so the gentlemen have something to wear. Sheila Collins, who plays Marmee, sourced her delightful outfit from her Duchy Opera.

There were so many talented singers auditioning for the Show that 4 of the characters ended up being double cast. This means that the tour can be split between 2 different casts, allowing one cast to rest their voices in between shows, but it also meant finding double the costumes because the casts playing the same parts were mostly different sizes!

2 casts at 5 different venues makes every show utterly unique. And both casts are amazingly good!

The fabulous March sisters in Cast 2 of our Touring Production of Little Women: Lisa Topsey - Jo March; Sophie Haddock - Meg; Bethany Lyne - Amy; Stephanie Rosewarne - Beth.

We're very excited to discover that we've been listed as one of the shows to see this summer in Cornwall by Cornwall Live

We've spent a lot of time altering clothes to fit our cast and make them more appropriate for the characters.

Dresses for Amy and Beth are shortened to emphasise that they are young children and I found a way to take them up that emphasises the ruffle to make them really young and girly. We also found some pinafores for them to wear that further referenced them as 1860s children.

We wanted Aunt March to be very grand so they have the largest crinolines. We used long taffeta skirts with lots of fabric that could sit comfortably on a crinoline, but still had to lengthen them to make them long enough.

Redannick Theatre has so many wonderful costumes hidden away on rails and in boxes. We managed to source most costumes from Redannick - tweeds, underskirts, bloomers, frock coats, dresses, breeches, ballgowns, fair Clarissa's lovely lace dress, the knight's tabard. It's a very small space with costumes rammed in all over the place and every time I go downstairs I find yet another wonderful outfit that I know would work beautifully for a particular part of the show. We were also very fortunate to have Sheila with us who enhanced the wardrobe and filled a few gaps from Duchy Opera.

My personal favourite found in the basement at Redannick is this stunning taffeta ballgown.

Opening night! And we got a standing ovation. Visitors backstage have tears in their eyes as they thank us for the wonderful performance.

Feedback and reviews start pouring in:

"Fantastic production!!! Well done everyone. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š I loved it but, more importantly, Liz adored it as a Little Women fan (despite the musical messinโ€™ with the bookโ€™s storyline!!!!! ๐Ÿ˜‰)
We thought Jo was terrific - a โญ๏ธ amongst stars!! ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ"

After our first 2 shows in Truro all the stage, props and costumes are packed and on their way to the wonderfully exciting Sterts Theatre and Arts Centre, a lovely open air theatre on Bodmin moor near Liskeard.

29th June 2018

The weather is hot and sunny and it's a gorgeous evening. It's a wonderful stage at Sterts and the audience is fantastic. Little Women is a high energy performance with lots of very quick changes, which can be very demanding, but the atmosphere here is so lovely, it feels like we're on holiday.

Little Women The Musical will be touring Cornwall from 26 June - 7 July 2018 and visiting Truro, Liskeard, Helston, St Ives and Penzance. Tickets:
