The Sewing and Design Studio welcomed two students for Work Experience Week this July 2023. Both students are studying textiles at school and proved they have a natural gift for designing upcycled outfits.
Their brief for the week was to upcycle old jeans and lace/fabric remnants into two items: one to go with our range of lace tops and the other could be whatever they wanted to do.
The students designed and made their own garments.
Alice Perkins cut off the top of a pair of jeans and added a tiered lace frill to the bottom. She also cut out and added lace flowers to the pockets and back. She then split the legs and added a lace front, eyelets and fabric lacing to create a dress or skirt that can be cinched to fit whoever wears it. She also made several floppy pink bows to go in hair or add to the dress.
Brooke Smith added lace to the pockets and fly of one pair of jeans and lace panel cut outs along the font legs. She added a flower using fabric lacing and eyelets to a denim miniskirt. She shred cut a fabric remnant and added lace panels and flowers which she sewed onto the bottom of the miniskirt. Pieces of lace were also strategiacally placed on the front of the denim of the skirt. A slit was cut into the skirt and a lacy mesh fabric panel added for modesty.
We rounded off the week with a photoshoot to show off their creations. A few suggestions were made during the design and sewing phases but full credit for the designs has to go to the students who made the final design decisions. I think you’ll agree they look fantastic! We look forward to seeing what they will go on to create in the future 😊
