The 1901 Ford Runabout had a Briggs-Stratton 2-cyclinder engine, a tiller style steering arm, mechanical lever-operated brakes and a sinlge wheel chain drive. The Henry Ford Company (previously the Detroit Automobile Company) built a handful of the experimental Ford Runabouts, but Henry Ford himself wanted to focus on producing racing cars. His investors, who’d demanded he get on with the production of runabouts to compete with others being made at that time, forced Henry Ford to leave the company. Leland took the company over and put his own engine into the car, but keeping much of the main chassis and bodywork to launch the Cadillac Motor Company in 1902.
