Scene 5 Fleeing Amsterdam

A map of the North Sea where Michael battles the squiddie and Lucifer has a darker plan for when they arrive in Cornwall.

Michael is always ready to protect us, but you are the hero today is waiting for

In this scene Lucifer is threatening to sabotage the crew of the Voorspoed with cholera. During my research for this scene I discovered that the crew of the Voorspoed were very sick and thought to be too unwell to steer the ship away from being shipwrecked on Perran Sands. St Agnes medical records show that there were a few outbreaks of cholera at this time. I was also surprised to learn that outbreaks of cholera still happen, especially in areas affected by war or natural disasters. The artwork is dedicated to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), (also known in English as Doctors Without Borders), who are often found containing outbreaks in war-torn areas when most other agencies have fled, for example Syria. Médecins Sans Frontières are currently looking for volunteers to help them map areas where humanitarian organisations are most needed by vulnerable communities. This scene was created before I discovered their work and seems predestined to be the one used to support them! Médecins Sans Frontières will receive 50% of profits on any products featuring artwork from this scene.

Médecins Sans Frontières
Cholera is a deadly but treatable disease which continues to affect millions worldwide. It causes profuse diarrhoea and vomiting which can lead to death by intense de-hydration, sometimes within a matter of hours. Outbreaks usually occur when there is overcrowding and inadequate access to clean water, rubbish collection and proper toilets. It most commonly attacks in the aftermath of disasters, like the Haiti earthquake of 2010, but can strike anywhere, especially in rainy seasons when houses and latrines flood and contaminated water collects in stagnant pools. The disease is treatable and, in many situations, MSF teams have limited the death rate to less than one percent.

Missing Maps Project
MSF are recruiting thousands of volunteers to map those parts of the world most vulnerable to natural disasters, disease outbreaks, epidemics or conflict. The maps currently used are very often drawn on a piece of paper by someone who has been there. MSF use maps everyday to get to patients, assess the needs of crisis-hit communities, track disease spread and respond to local epidemics, so by supporting the Missing Maps Project, you become a vital part of their work http://www.missingmaps.org/
