About Help Refugees

Help Refugees fills the gaps and acts where others won’t. Sometimes that means search & rescue boats. Sometimes it means providing safe, secure long-term housing.

Set up as nothing more than a hashtag in August 2015, a group of friends wanted to raise £1,000 and fill a van full of donations to take down to Calais. Within a week, they had raised £56,000. They were soon receiving 7,000 items every day.

Fast forward three years, and they have helped over 722,500 people, managed over 25,000 volunteers, and support more than 80 projects across Europe and the Middle East. They have established a fieldwork first, network approach to giving aid, establishing local networks and working with local partners to deliver projects.

High-profile musicians, filmmakers and actors joined their ‘Choose Love’ campaign. Help Refugees have pioneered a new movement in humanitarian response – ordinary people helping other ordinary people in need in the most direct of ways.

Clothing needed by Attika Human Support:

  • warm dry clothes and shoes to survive the cold and rainy winters
  • lightweight clothing and shoes for the hot summers

Most asylum seekers are wet and cold when they arrive, usually with just the clothes on their backs.

Attika Human Support helps desperate people fleeing war, torture, and terror. The NGO runs Lesvos’s biggest warehouse distributing goods for asylum seekers. Most international donations of clothes, shoes, tents, baby carriers, towels and toiletries to Lesvos ship directly to Attika. The Attika team sorts and delivers consignments to local NGOs who distribute them to the asylum seekers they work with. The Attika warehouse is the only warehouse open to everyone.

Shoes Wanted

Shoes are wanted by a number of charities. The homeless, refugees and women in shelters have no spare clothes. Often walking is their only form of transport. They need good shoes to protect their feet from the damp and cold. When feet are damp for too long, trenchfoot occurs. Trenchfoot is a common ailment among the homeless and refugees.

Bras wanted by Smalls For All

Bras wanted by Smalls For All
Bras wanted by Smalls For All

Smalls For All

Bras wanted by Smalls For All to help protect girls and women in some African communities from rape. Only wealthier families own underwear so girls and women wearing underwear are deemed to be cared for and protected by a male relative.

Smalls for All collects and distributes underwear to help women and children in Africa.

Giving pants and bras may seem like a small thing, but it can make a life-changing difference. For example, having pants can help teenage girls complete their education without having to miss school each month during their period.

They help those living in orphanages, slums, IDP camps and schools, as well as providing underwear to hospitals to help those suffering from medical conditions like obstetric fistula.

They accept donations of new pants and new bras and gently worn bras.

MOST URGENT:

  • new pants for children aged 3-15
  • new pants for ladies size 8-16, especially black – in full brief, mini or high leg.

Other Items Needed:

  • new or ‘gently worn’ bras of any size, including sports and nursing bras, but not teen, cropped-top style or bikini tops.

Smalls For All have an Amazon wish list for new pants, so you can order online and have them delivered directly to Smalls for All if that’s easier.  Go to their Amazon wish list.
